...Parental power matters
I was told a story that someone had been told by someone else, so this could be a little bit like Chinese Whispers. However, I think the tale has some merit and it went something like this...
The Adolescent Elephant
In an Indian village, some time not so long ago, the locals were finding they were being harassed by young elephants. They were boisterous and arrogant and very confident for their ages. Some would say, much like teenage human youths - filled with vigour and a eagerness to explore their strength. So much so, the village was slowly being destroyed.
The youngsters, the villagers had had enough and were about to trap and kill them when a visitor came to the village and asked them to spare their lives for a little longer. He couldn't understand it, as normally elephants wouldn't do such things. So, he convinced the villagers he would explore the reasons for their behaviour and come up with an answer.
It wasn't long before he found out why. After following the herd and silently observing them at play and with their family.
The man returned to the villagers and explained that some poachers had been killing off all the male adults. They may have had the bigger tusks that were craved by such people.
So, he made a suggestion. He went on a fundraising expedition, gathered interested people of note to rally behind him and organised for the purchase of some adult male elephants to be introduced to the herd.
The man revisited a couple of months later, and the villagers reported no trouble at all.
The male influence was a sorely needed position in the herd mentality. With them, they brought the influence required to give the young elephants the guidance and boundaries they craved.
